Skyview MS Friday Message 9.1
Happy Friday Eagles!
"Don't look down, it's an impossible view; Fly like an eagle whatever you do." - Mos Def
The Skyview middle school staff just wrapped up three days of professional development to kick off the 2023-24 school year. Each member was asked to think about their WHY and to dream radically on how to make their classroom space and our school community welcoming for ALL students and families. My heart is full knowing that we have such great educators and support staff who care deeply about student growth and success in the middle. Alice Walker, said, "the nature of a flower is to bloom.' I look forward to seeing ALL of our SMS students bloom. And in order to do so, we need YOU and your partnership, connection and engagement. Our goal this school year is to be intentional on how we engage families and the community in partnering with the school. Make sure to hit APPRECIATE after you read Skyview communication.
Yesterday it was nice to see so many students and families at the 6th grade Frenzy enjoying popcorn, otter pops, getting athletic paperwork, joining our PTSA, taking small tours and getting acquainted with the campus. What a frenzy! Our hope is that it allowed 6th graders and their family to feel welcomed in the school and start to put some faces with staff names before school starts. This year will be amazing and I have no doubt in my mind that the F Building (SkyCreek Building) will cultivate the excitement and positive energy of our incoming 6th graders. Thank you to our PTSA leaders and volunteers for making it a special community event. Join the PTSA and support the Skyview Food Pantry - all donations are welcomed. No student or family should go without. Contact: nchs.sms.foodpantry@gmail.com
*** If you have Healthy SNACKS you would like to share drop them off in the main office and give them to Mr. C our awesome Dean of students.
Below you will find a few important reminders:
Be On -Time:
School starts at 8:00 am and ends at 2:35 pm ( Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday)
* On Early Release Wednesday school starts at 8:00 am and ends at 1:05 pm.
* Students are encouraged to eat breakfast before school starts. The cafeteria doors open at 7:30 am. It is important that you DO NOT drop your student off on campus before 7:30 am.
* The academic buildings will not open until 7:50 am. Students will not be permitted in the academic buildings unless escorted and supervised from an adult.
* Students may put things in their school issued lockers after 7:50 am. Each student is assigned a locker at SMS. They are not allowed to share their lockers.
Note: ALL visitors MUST check into the main office when arriving on campus. Students are not allowed to bring friends to school and/or DOOR DASH things to school. It is important that we avoid disruption to the educational process. Parents who need to DROP things off to their students may bring items to the main office. Please make arrangements in advance so your student knows to check at the main office. Thank you all in advance for your understanding.
Cell Phones (Out of sight & Out of mind):
We have the When you Arrive to 2:35 policy. The expectation is that students must SILENCE and put their cell phones in their backpack upon arrival. Cell phones should not be on their person unless permission is given by a staff member. Teachers may welcome cell phones for educational purposes within their own classrooms on an as needed basis. Students who violate the cell phone expectation may have disciplinary consequences and/or may get their cell phone confiscated and brought to the main office to school administration. We ask that parents/guardians support the school with having students unplugged from their devices (out of sight - out of mind) during school hours. They can do it! Contact the main office if you need to get ahold of your student. Note school admin will be going into classrooms and teaching the Students Rights and Responsibilities the month of September.
MS Athletics practices and tryouts begin 2:45 pm - 4:15 pm on September 7, 2023. Good luck! SMS provides after school activity buses on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The activity buses may be ridden ONLY by Skyview students who are regular bus riders and stay after school to attend a supervised school activity. Bus routes are posted on the Skyview website http://skyview.nsd.org/
We encourage students and families to visit the Northshore School District transportation page for bus route information. [//www.nsd.org/our-distPraPrict/departments/transportation]www.nsd.org/our-distPraPrict/departments/transportation
Student Schedules - Short message from our school counselors:
Hello Skyview Students and Families,
The counseling office has completed schedules for students, and they are now viewable in StudentVUE and/or ParentVUE. Some changes to schedules may still occur as counselors continue to balance class sizes as much as possible. All students will be provided with a paper copy of their final schedule on their first day of school, which will also include their locker number and combination. If you notice an error in your student’s schedule, such as missing a core class, incorrect placement in a core class, or an incomplete schedule, please contact your counselor. Thank you.
