Skyview Bikes, Scooters and Skateboard policies

Bikes, Scooters, & Skateboards
(whether electric or not)

At Skyview, we encourage students to enjoy safe and responsible ways of getting to and from school. To keep everyone safe, please follow these guidelines:

  • Must be legal* to ride.
  • Dismount when you arrive. Walk your bike, scooter, or skateboard onto campus.
  • Lock up your ride. Use the bike racks near the bus loop to store your bike or scooter safely during the day. Families are responsible for providing the lock for the bike or scooter.
  • Storage. No equipment will be stored in the Main Office. Students must ensure that they lock up their bikes or scooters on the bike rack and store any other items in their assigned locker.
  • Protect yourself. Helmets are required for all students riding bikes or scooters, in compliance with Washington State bicycle safety laws. Your safety matters! Helmets should be stored in the student’s locker throughout the day.
  • Stay off the track and field. Bikes, scooters, skateboards, and other wheeled devices are not permitted on the track, field, or inside school buildings at any time.
  • Before and After School Only. Riding is permitted only before and after school. Use of bikes, scooters, and skateboards is not allowed during the school day.
  • Ride safely and be a good neighbor – Please use sidewalks and designated areas safely, keep crosswalks and traffic lanes clear, and do not block driveways, entrances, or pathways. Be respectful of our neighbors and community by keeping noise, speed, and behavior under control.
  • Charging. For safety reasons, students are not allowed to charge e-bikes, e-scooters, or other personal electric rideables on school property.
  • E-bikes cannot exceed 20 mph and must have pedals and rely on rider power.

Failure to follow these rules may result in loss of privilege to bring wheeled transportation to school.

Students will receive one verbal warning, and families will be notified of the warning through ParentSquare. Continued violations may result in additional disciplinary consequences. Depending on the circumstances and severity of the behavior, consequences may include detention, Saturday School, or suspension.

Skyview Middle School and the Northshore School District are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items, or for accidents or injuries related to the use of bikes, scooters, skateboards, or any private transportation methods that students and their families chose to use to and from school.

*For Safety's Sake: Know the Difference Between E-Bikes and E-Motorcycles

It's important to understand the key differences between bicycles and motorcycles.  The Bothell Police Department wants all riders to be safe  and avoid costly infractions.

*What's the difference?

E-Motorcycles:

  • Are motorcycles (not E-bicycles).
  • Have no moving pedals.
  • Are not street legal, unless they have many safety features, such as lights, mirrors, turn signals, and more.
  • Are illegal on sidewalks.
  • Are fully motor-powered & designed for higher speeds.
  • Must be registered with the state and insured.
  • Must be 16 to operate, with license and knowledge of laws and safety.

E-Bikes:

  • Have an electric motor that assists with pedaling or propels without pedaling.
  • Riders must wear helmets.
  • No driver’s license, registration or insurance required.
  • Class 1: Pedal-assisted only. Max speed 20 mph.
  • Class 2: Pedal-assisted and motor-propelled without pedaling. Max speed 20 mph.
  • Class 3: Pedal-assisted only. Max speed 28 mph. Not allowed on shared-use paths, sidewalks, or non-motorized trails. Riders must be 16+.
  • Class 1 & 2 allowed on bike paths, lanes, sidewalks, and some trails.
