Students may NOT have their cell phones out in the locker room at any time of the day for any reason.
If a parent/guardian needs to contact a student(s) during school hours, please contact our Main Office at 425-408-6800. The Main Office is open from 7:30am - 3:30pm. Students may also use the main office phone to contact parents/guardians during school hours. Please do not text or call your student’s phone during the school day and make sure they know important phone numbers!
If students violate these expectations:
- 1st offense: phone is confiscated and taken to the main office, and students can pick it up at the end of the school day.
- 2nd offense: phone is confiscated and taken to the main office. After-school or Fun Friday detention is assigned.

Saturday School is assigned and the student will be required to turn their device into the main office before school. Failure to do so may result in additional disciplinary action.
SMS Hall Pass Policy
2025-26 SMS Hall Pass Policy/Expectations
Expectation: Each teacher has a colored/labeled pass, these are the passes that students must use when traveling in the hallways during instructional time.
Only ONE student should be out of the class at a time (exception for those summoned from elsewhere such as counselor, admin, nurse, etc.)
This policy applies to all teachers & classes at Skyview Middle School.
What does this mean? Each teacher will receive ONE classroom pass. Students must sign in/out when leaving the classroom during instructional time for any purpose. Written on each of the passes are the expectations for using the hall pass:
- Bathrooms are not for hanging out
- Absolutely NO cell phones, personal technology, or food in the bathrooms (cell phones should be secured in a locker)
- Use the closest restroom to your current class
- Students in portables and C building electives use the A-building bathrooms
- Cafeteria bathrooms are only for students at lunch
Lanyards are divided by building. Each building has a different color. The colors are as follows:
F-Building - Green Passes
Gym/Cafeteria/C Classes - Black Passes
Upstairs A - Red Passes
Downstairs A/Portables - Blue Passes
T-Building - Purple Passes
Although the passes are labeled with expectations for the restroom the same pass must be used when students are traveling to the office.
Consequences: Students in the hallway without the appropriate pass will be escorted back to their classroom. Students who do not follow the Hall Pass Expectations may face disciplinary action.
SMS Dress Code
Our values are:
- All students should be able to dress comfortably for school without fear of or actual unnecessary discipline or body shaming.
- All students and staff should understand that they are responsible for managing their own personal “distractions” without regulating individual students’ clothing/self-expression.
- Students should not face unnecessary barriers to school attendance.
- Reasons for conflict and inconsistent discipline should be minimized whenever possible.
I. GOALS OF THE SMS STUDENT DRESS CODE
The Skyview Middle School dress code will hopefully accomplish several goals:
- Maintain a safe learning environment in classes where protective or supportive clothing is needed, such as Science or CTE classes (eye or body protection) or PE (athletic attire/shoes).
- Allow students to wear clothing of their choice that is comfortable.
- Allow students to wear clothing that expresses their self-identified gender.
- Allow students to wear religious attire without fear of discipline or discrimination.
- Prevent students from wearing clothing with offensive images or language, including profanity, hate speech, gang association/affiliation, and pornography.
- Prevent students from wearing clothing with images or language depicting or advocating violence or the use of alcohol, tobacco, vaping, drugs, or other dangerous substances.
- Ensure that all students are treated equitably regardless of gender/gender identification, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, body type/size, religion, and personal style.
Consequences for Violating the Dress Code Policy:
- First violation — change clothing and parent notification.
- Second violation — change clothing, parent notification, and referral to an administrator conference.
- Third violation — change clothing, parent notification, administrator conference, and after-school or Fun Friday detention.
- Fourth violation — change clothing, parent notification, administrator conference, and 2-hour Saturday School.
Continued violations of the dress code will result in additional disciplinary actions.
II. DRESS CODE POLICY
The primary responsibility for a student’s attire resides with the student and parents or guardians. Northshore School District and Skyview Middle School are responsible for seeing that student attire does not interfere with the health or safety of any student and that student attire does not contribute to a hostile or intimidating atmosphere for any student.
Students Must Wear:
- Top: shirt/blouse/sweater/sweatshirt/dress/etc.
- Bottom: pants/sweatpants/shorts/skirt/dress/leggings/etc.
- Shoes: activity-specific shoe requirements are permitted (for example for sports).
- Certain body parts must be covered for all students.
Clothes must be worn in a way such that the chest, genitals, and buttocks are covered with opaque (non-see-through) material.
Tops must have opaque fabric in the front and on the sides (under the arms). - Courses that include attire as part of the curriculum (for example, professionalism, public speaking, and job readiness) may include assignment-specific dress, but should not focus on covering individuals’ bodies or promoting culturally-specific attire.
Students May Wear:
- Face masks (medical)
- Hats, including religious headwear.
- Hoodie sweatshirts (over the head is allowed).
- Hats and other headwear must allow the face to be visible to staff, and not interfere with the line of sight of any student or staff. Hoodies must allow the face and ears to be visible to school staff.
- Fitted pants, including leggings, jeggings, yoga pants, and “skinny jeans.”
- Midriff-baring shirts (minimal skin, with no part under the breast showing).
- Pajamas.
- Ripped jeans, as long as underwear is not exposed.
- Tank tops, including spaghetti straps, halter tops, and tubetops.
- Sunglasses (but can be worn only outside - except for verified medical reasons).
Students Cannot Wear:
- Violent language or images.
- Images or language depicting tobacco, drugs, alcohol, vaping, or weapons (or any illegal item or activity) or the use of the same.
- Clothing that displays or promotes hate speech, gang or hate group association/affiliation, profanity, or pornography.
- Images or language that creates a hostile or intimidating environment.
- Visible underwear, lingerie, or corset (visible waistbands or straps on undergarments worn under other clothing are not a violation).
- Bathing suits or sports bras as the only top.
- Helmets, masks, or headgear that obscures the face (except as a religious observance).
- Accessories with sharp objects, spikes, etc.
Backpack Policy
Students are provided with access to a secure locker where they can store their belongings. This is where students should keep their backpacks and all personal technology that accompanies them to campus.
Backpacks must remain locked in the student’s assigned school locker from bell-to-bell, unless the student has an authorized Skyview Backpack Pass. Backpacks create hazards at school due to limited space and growing class sizes.
If students are seen transitioning with backpacks during any time other than indicated above they will be sent back to their locker and if they arrive late to class, this will be an unexcused tardy.
We understand that lockers can sometimes cause anxiety and we are here to help! There are teachers in all of the hallways with access to keys to assist students if there is a struggle. For the first few weeks we will grant some grace. However, we expect students to report any issues they are experiencing with their locker to the main office as soon as possible so we can assist.
If there is a need for your student to have access to a backpack pass, please express this need to one of the school nurse's, a school counselor, or assistant principal.
How not to lose your backpack Pass
You have been approved to have a backpack pass. What does this mean? This means that you have been granted permission to have your backpack with you while you navigate campus. You have received a Skyview branded keychain (see below). You MUST wear this on your backpack at all times and it MUST be clearly visible. Your family will also be notified that you have been granted a backpack pass and they will receive a copy of Skyview’s Backpack Pass Policy. If you violate the policy three times you will lose your backpack pass for that school year. Violations will be recorded in our student discipline management system (synergy) as well as our Backpack Pass Tracking Sheet. In order to keep your backpack pass you MUST adhere to the following rules:
- Backpack passes are non-transferable. What does this mean? Your pass is ONLY FOR YOU. You may not give this pass to anyone for any reason. If you get caught sharing a pass that will be a strike against your pass.
- Your pass MUST be visible and attached to your bag at ALL TIMES while you are on campus. Failure to do so or engaging in a power struggle with a staff member who asks to see your pass will result in a strike against your pass.
*Exception to the “3 Strikes” rule will be any committing any of the offenses spelled out in the “Offenses That Will Automatically Void a Backpack Pass” you can find at the bottom of this document.
